Bayern Munich will like to begin their German bundesliga season on a high after a stellar season which saw them win treble as they play host to Schalke On Friday evening.
The Bavarians are on a 22-game winning run at the moment, and this stretch of victories helped them to their second even treble in their proud history. The Bavarians won their eighth straight Bundesliga title, 20th German Cup and third UEFA Champions League title. Hansi Flick’s side have been unbeatable in 2020, winning 21 of their 22 matches with one draw. They beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 in the German Cup final, resuming a month later in the Champions League. Bayern Munich thrashed Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate in the round of 16, humiliated Barcelona 8-2 in the quarter-finals and beat Lyon 3-0 in the semi-finals. FC Bayern beat PSG 1-0 in the final with Kingsley Coman scoring the winning goal. Hansi Flick is unlikely to make too many changes to his winning team. Winger Kingsley Coman is in quarantine and midfielder Thiago is on the verge of joining Liverpool. Right-back Benjamin Pavard should start with new signing Leroy Sane a chance to make his full Bundesliga debut for Bayern against his boyhood club.
Schalke were travelling nicely last season, in fine form until late January when a 5-0 thumping at Bayern Munich derailed their season. The Miners failed to win a match in regular time in their next 17 matches in all competitions. David Wagner’s side have lost 7 of their last 9 Bundesliga matches and failed to score in 6 of their last 9 away matches. They ended their campaign with a 4-1 home defeat to Wolfsburg and 4-0 loss at Freiburg. Schalke have played five preseason friendlies, beating Osnabruck, Aris and Bochum with defeats against Verl and Uerdingen. Centre-back Salif Sané and midfielder Omar Mascarell are close to returning after a long-term injuries. Schalke have signed strikers Goncalo Paciencia and Vedad Ibisevic to compete with Ahmed Kutucu and Guido Burgstaller.
Bayern Munich are the German and European Champions, a powerhouse in international football. Schalke have serious financial problems and a look like a club on a downward spiral. It’s going to be very difficult finding value on Bayern Munich this season. The Bavarians should have no problems beating Schalke however, with the handicap markets sure to pay out.
