Dynamo Kiev host AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round on Wednesday. The Ukraine club recently beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 in the Super Cup and have the confidence to win at home.
Dynamo Kiev beat Olimpik Donetsk 4-1 to start the Ukraine Premier League season. Mircea Lucescu’s side beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 in the Ukraine Super Cup with Carlos de Pena, Gerson Rodrigues and Fran Sol on target. They beat Kolos Kovalivka 1-0 in a pre-season friendly, returning to Premier League action with a 0-0 draw against Desna. Centre-backs Denys Popov and Mykyta Burda are injured alongside right-back Oleksandr Tymchyk. Striker Artem Besedin is banned until 20 December for a doping violation.
AZ Alkmaar had a poor pre-season before their first competitive match in the UEFA Champions League second Qualifying Round. They won 3-1 at home against Viktoria Plzen in extra time. Teun Koopmeiners equalised with a 90th minute penalty, substitute Albert Gudmundsson scoring twice in extra time to progress. Arne Slot’s side have played two more friendlies since, defeated 1-0 by Den Haag before a 1-1 draw against Gent. Centre-back Pantelis Chatzidiakos is injured alongside attacking midfielder Jeremy Helmer.
Dynamo Kiev are hard to beat at home in the UEFA Champions League, undefeated in their last five home matches with three wins and two draws. AZ Alkmaar were slightly fortunate to progress against Viktoria Plzen but their luck could run out in Ukraine.
