Inter Milan continues their Serie A title defense when they travel to face newly promoted Empoli at the Stadio Castellani on Wednesday evening.

Empoli has been impressive so far in their return to Serie A. They are with five wins so far and sit 10th in Serie A standings with 12 points. Empoli ended their two-game losing streak when they thrashed fellow promoted side Salernitana 4-2 at the weekend. An electric first-half brace from Andrea Pinamonti and Patrick Cutrone put the game to bed. Empoli has scored 14 goals this season and conceded 18. Empoli has been poor at home this term with just one win on home ground and they will need to be at their defensive best to stand a chance against Inter Milan. Empoli is lucky injury-wise and is likely to set up with the same starting line-up.

Scudetto holders Inter Milan are finding it hard in their title defense as they sit seven points behind the league leaders and know that any kind of slip-up is likely to see that gap widen. They welcomed Juventus in their last Serie A outing and were poised for a victory over the Old Lady but a Paulo Dybala goal after a controversial penalty call in the 89th minute saw them settle for a point. Nonetheless, Edin Dzeko’s goal was his ninth in 13 appearances since joining as Romelu Lukaku’s replacement in the summer, and Inter remains the league’s top scorers – sitting third in the table seven points adrift Napoli. They will be eager to take six points from six against Empoli and Udinese during the coming week, before they meet AC Milan next month. Given a hectic run of games, Simone Inzaghi may decide to rotate his squad a little, Denzel Dumfries, Dimarco, and Vecino may start here.

Both teams are without a clean sheet in their last four matches. Empoli has seen over 2.5 goals in five of their last seven games. Inter Milan have won their last seven meetings with Empoli and are undefeated in their previous 14 head-to-heads. Given Empoli’s poor form at home, we are backing a comfortable win for Inter Milan.

PREDICTION: INTER WIN 0-2/1-2/0-3/1-3
