Inter Milan finished second in Serie A, one point behind Juventus. Antonio Conte’s side are undefeated in their last 10 matches, winning four of the last five by 2+ goals. The Nerazzurri won 3-0 at Genoa, 2-0 against Napoli and 2-0 at Atalanta to finish their league campaign. Inter beat Getafe 2-0 in the Europa League round of 16 with Romelu Lukaku and Christian Eriksen on target. Inter Milan defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Nicolo Barella and Lukaku established a 2-0 lead with the Italians largely controlling the match, taking 18-9 shots including 7-2 on target. Midfielder Matías Vecino remains out injured. Victor Moses is a chance to replace Danilo D’Ambrosio at right wing-back but there should be minimal changes if any to Conte’s starting side.
Shakhtar Donetsk won their fourth straight Ukraine Premier League title last season after a strong finish to the campaign. Luís Castro’s side finished 23 points ahead of Dynamo Kiev. Shakhtar are undefeated in their last 11 competitive matches, winning nine. They got past Wolfsburg 5-1 on aggregate in the Europa League round of 16 after a 3-0 home win. The Ukraine champions beat Basel 4-1 in the quarter-finals. Junior Moraes and Taison established a 2-0 half time lead with Alan Patrick and Dodô making it 4-0. Shakhtar Donetsk are missing defensive midfielder Maksym Malyshev and left-back Ismaily to injury. Centre-back Davit Khocholava is available after suspension and could replace Valeriy Bondar in the starting side.
Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk are in top form. Inter have the pedigree and class but the Ukraine club are extremely dangerous with six Brazilian born players starting against Basel. Both clubs like to play counter attacking football which should make for an interesting tactical battle on Monday. This should be another great match. Inter Milan’s experience gives them the edge against Shakhtar Donetsk with both teams tipped to score.
