Leipzig vs Lyon Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips
UEFA Champions League | Red Bull Arena | 2nd October 2019 20:00
RB Leipzig are predicted to get back to winning ways against Lyon in the UEFA Champions League. The Bundesliga club have been strong at the Red Bull Arena where Timo Werner can star on the European stage once again.
Leipzig had a great start to the season under new manager Julian Nagelsmann, but suffered a shock 3-1 home defeat against Schalke on Saturday. The Red Bulls hit the woodwork and squandered other presentable opportunities early on and defended poorly. Nagelsmann will be demanding a response so we could see some changes. Christopher Nkunku should start in central midfield, Lukas Klostermann at right-back and Ibrahima Konate back into central defence. Tyler Adams, Kevin Kampl and Hannes Wolf are injured but Konrad Laimer is back from suspension and could feature.
Rookie manager Sylvinho is under early pressure after failing to win any of Lyon’s last seven matches in all competitions. A 1-0 home defeat against PSG was followed by a 2-2 draw at Brest and 1-0 home loss against Nantes on Saturday. Marçal’s own goal was the difference and the left-back could make way for Youssouf Koné in Leipzig. Marcelo returned from injury against Brest and provides competition for Jason Denayer and Joachim Andesen in central defence. Jeff Reine-Adélaïde could be under threat from Martin Terrier and Jean Lucas while Lucas Tousart is another player that could be called upon. Bertrand Traoré made way for Maxwel Cornet at half time against Brest so we may see a number of changes from Sylvinho.
Leipzig have arguably the best manager in the Bundesliga and I expect a reaction from Julian Nagelsmann here. He will make changes and come up with a plan to disrupt the French club. Striker Timo Werner will be new to Lyon’s defenders and he can run rampant. He scored both goals at Benfica in the 2-1 win and has the pace to trouble Lyon’s defence.
