Leipzig and PSG meet in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday. The Bundesliga club overcame the odds against Atletico with PSG leaving it late against Atalanta, who will come out on top in Portugal?
Leipzig have been very consistent since February, going unbeaten in 16 of their last 17 competitive matches. They thrashed Tottenham 4-0 on aggregate in the Champions League round of 16. Julian Nagelsmann’s side won 2-1 against Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals. Marcel Sabitzer assisted Dani Olmo for the opener and started the move that saw Tyler Adams score a late winner. Centre-back Ibrahima Konaté remains out with a hip injury. Attacker Hee-chan Hwang is ineligible and Timo Werner has joined Chelsea.
Paris Saint-Germain won their fourth straight Ligue 1 title last season after being eight points clear of Marseille with a game in hand. Thomas Tuchel’s side beat Saint-Etienne in the French Cup final and Lyon in the French League Cup final. Neymar took seven of PSG’s 11 shots against Lyon but was unable to score. It was a similar stat in the 2-1 win against Atalanta in the Champions League quarter-finals. Neymar took seven of PSG’s 17 shots, missed some easy chances but still came up big to make the winning plays. Down 1-0 in the 90th minute, Neymar assisted Marquinhos for the equaliser and started the move for Kylian Mbappé assist Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting for the winner. Left-back Layvin Kurzawa is injured and midfielder Marco Verratti is out with a calf injury. PSG winger Ángel Di María is available after suspension. Star striker Kylian Mbappé is a chance to start after overcoming a sprained ankle to feature off the bench against Atlanta.
Leipzig showed they can match up against the best this season, too good for Tottenham and getting past Atletico Madrid without Timo Werner. Julian Nagelsmann is a great manager and destined to win many trophies.
Nagelsmann comes up against former mentor Thomas Tuchel who will never have a better chance to get PSG to their first Champions League final. With Neymar and Kylian Mbappé in his side, PSG have a definite class advantage.
