Liverpool vs Southampton England Premier League Predictions
England Premier League | Anfield | 1st February 2020 16:00
Liverpool continue their march towards the Premier League title as they face Southampton at Anfield. The Reds have an unblemished home record this season and are expected to ease past the Saints on Saturday.
There is an air of inevitability in the Premier League title race this season with Liverpool looking unstoppable at the moment. They have beaten every team this season and hold a massive lead at the top of the table. The Reds earned a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in their last Premier League fixture at Anfield with Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah getting the goals. Jurgen Klopp’s men have a 100% record at Anfield and have won 26 of their last 27 home matches stretching back to last season. Liverpool have returned to their defensive best in recent weeks and have kept clean sheets in their last four home matches. They also retain their quality in attack with the likes of Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian with 11 Premier League goals this season. Sadio Mane is doubtful for Saturday’s clash with the forward nursing a slight hamstring problem. Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri and James Milner are also sidelined but defenders Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip and midfielder Fabinho are available for selection after returning from injury.
Southampton are coming off a 1-1 home draw against Tottenham in the FA Cup last Saturday. They were behind for most of the second half before Sofiane Boufal struck the equaliser three minutes from time.
The Saints are well clear of the relegation zone but have a poor record against Liverpool to whom they have lost their last five meetings. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are winless in two of their last three matches in all competitions, suffering a 3-2 home defeat to Wolves in that run. Jannik Vestergaard and Shane Long both missed the FA Cup clash but are expected to recover in time for Saturday’s match. Sofiane Boufal could also be given a start in midfield after coming off the bench to good effect against Spurs.
Mohamed Salah will be the one to watch for Liverpool having scored four goals in his last four home matches. The Egyptian winger has also found the net five times in as many appearances against Southampton.
Southampton are heavily dependent on top scorer Danny Ings and tend to struggle when he is not at his best. The striker has looked off colour lately with just one goal in his last five appearances. Anfield has become a fortress for Liverpool in recent years. Southampton are likely to be the latest team to fall at the home of the Premier League leaders.
