Premier League plays host to a highly-anticipated 186th Manchester derby as Manchester United welcomes Manchester City to the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday.
Manchester United responded to a disappointing 5-0 against Liverpool at Old Trafford with a 0-3 away win against Tottenham. They currently sit 5th on the Premier League standings with 20 pts – three points adrift this weekend’s opponents. With pressure mounting on Ole Gunna Solksjaer after an utter humiliation at the hands of Liverpool, United prevailed comfortably in North London, as strikes from Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, and Marcus Rashford set the Red Devils on their way to a 3-0 win. After a 2-2 draw with Atalanta in the champions league, Ole’s men will now focus on keeping the defending champions at bay. Defender Raphael Varane is out with a hamstring injury. Paul Pogba continues his suspension. It is interesting to see if Solskjær would stick to his newly found 3-5-2 formation.
Manchester City has been solid this premier league season. They sit 3rd in the premier league standings with 20 pts – five points adrift league leaders Chelsea. Following on from their midweek exit in the Carabao Cup, they suffered a shock defeat last weekend as Crystal Palace claimed a 2-0 win at the Etihad. However, Pep Guardiola’s side bounced back in style as they put four past Club Brugge midweek in the champions league. They have now scored 15 goals in their last six games and they will fancy their chances against a United’s fragile defence. Defender Aymeric Laporte will join Ferran Torres on the sidelines following his red card against Crystal Palace.
Defensive frailties have seen Manchester United keep just two clean sheets in 15 competitive games this season. Defensively they have been a shambles this season and Tuesday’s injury to Raphael Varane makes their defensive outlook even bleaker. Manchester City has won eight of the last 11 Manchester derbies and are favourites for another win here. Cristiano Ronaldo has scored four goals in his last five games and is backed to score here.
