Napoli host AC Milan on Sunday in the Serie A in a top-of-the-table clash. AC Milan will be looking to extend their unbeaten start in the league, while a win for Napoli could see them end the week on top of Serie A.
Napoli wasted little time starting the season. The Gli Azzurri won four of their opening five Serie A matches, inflicting heavy defeats to the likes of Genoa 6-0 and Atalanta 4-1. They were, however, brought back to earth by Sassuolo, who defeated them 2-0 at home. Napoli recovered by defeating Rijeka 2-1 in the Europa League. Their last match before the international break was a 1-0 over Bologna with Victor Osimhen’s 23rd minute goal separating the two sides. Gennaro Gattuso could be missing up to four of his starters for this top-of-the-table clash. Osimhen has been sidelined after injuring his shoulder in the break, while defender Elseid Hysaj tested positive for coronavirus. Midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko returned to training this week and will be doing everything he can to prove his fitness as he recovers from a fever.
The Rossoneri are daring to dream. Undefeated in the league after seven matches, AC Milan sit two points clear on top of the Serie A. After a narrow 2-1 win over Udinese in the league, AC Milan suffered their first defeat in 24 matches going down 3-0 to Lille in the Europa League. Their final match before the break was a 2-2 draw with Hellas Verona. The 39-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the equaliser in the 93rd minute to maintain his side’s unbeaten start to the league. AC Milan will be without head coach Stefano Pioli and his number two Giacomo Murelli are both test positive for coronavirus.
This match is a big test for the title credentials of both sides. The Rossoneri have not taken many major scalps this season and will have identified this clash as season defining. Napoli, meanwhile, sit in a similar boat and will find themselves equal with AC Milan on points should they win. Although, their long injury list could be somewhat of a concern. Both teams will be coming in with lots to prove and if recent history is any indicator, this one should be a festival of goals
