The Eredivisie is the highest division of professional football in the Netherlands. The Eredivisie is one of the best football competitions in Europe, with clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord Rotterdam boasting a rich history in European competitions.
The Dutch national football championship was founded in 1898 and remained an amateur competition until 1954. After a long battle the Netherlands finally embraced professional football, with the Eredivisie contested for the first time in the 1956-57 season.
The Eredivisie consists of 18 clubs with every club playing each other home and away. After 34 games the team with the most points claims the Dutch national football championship.
The top two Eredivisie clubs compete in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, the third placed team goes into the UEFA Europa League group stage. The clubs placed 4th to 7th competing in the Europa League play-off, with the winner going into the Europa League qualifiers the following season.
The bottom club is automatically relegated to the second division called the Eerste Divisie. The clubs finishing in 16th and 17th positions compete in a separate promotion/relegation play-offs with the clubs that finished 2nd to 6th in the Eerste Divisie.
Ajax has won most Dutch championship titles with 33, PSV Eindhoven next best with 24 and Feyenoord with 15. These “Big Three” clubs have never been relegated, dominating football in the Netherlands winning all but three titles since 1965.
Some of the best players in the world learned their trade in the Eredivisie, such as Johan Cruijff, Marco van Basten, Romário, Dennis Bergkamp, Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Luis Suarez.
