Sevilla host Real Madrid at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in La Liga on Saturday. Julen Lopetegui returns to the club who sacked him after just three months in charge with the teams separated by a single point on the table.
Sevilla were on a run of five wins in a row across all competitions. They beat Krasnodar 3-2, Osasuna 1-0 and Celta Vigo 4-2, all of which were at home. Sevilla followed that up with a last gasp 2-1 away win at Krasnodar and a 1-0 win at Huesca. In their last match, they were beaten 4-0 at home by Chelsea with several players missing. Sevilla were outclassed from the start. Sevilla had numerous injuries for their last match as winger Susu and left-backs Marcos Acuna and Sergio Escudero missed out completely. All three remain doubts for this clash. Yassine Bounou is expected to be missing in goal and Carlos Fernandez Luna is doubtful in attack. Luuk de Jong and Lucas Ocampos were both on the bench against Chelsea but should return in the forward line.
Real Madrid are not enjoying a good run at the moment. They are three matches in La Liga without a win having lost 4-1 at Valencia, drawn 1-1 at Villarreal and lost 2-1 at home to Deportivo Alaves in their last La Liga match. Zinedine Zidane’s team did beat a 10-man Inter Milan 2-0 in-between that run as Eden Hazard and an own goal sealed the win. In their last match, Real Madrid lost 2-0 away to Shakhtar Donetsk in what was a poor performance. Their hopes of qualification for the knockout rounds now rest on their final game against Borussia Monchengladbach. Real Madrid have several injuries to contend with. In defence, Sergio Ramos has been missing and right-backs Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola are expected to be out. Eden Hazard is injured yet again in attack with a thigh problem. Luka Jovic has been ruled out up front due to COVID-19.
Sevilla have been in good form but were humbled by Chelsea in midweek with a few players missing. They lack the depth to cover for those injuries. Real Madrid are in terrible form and also have a big Champions League match on the horizon which could prove a big distraction for Zidane’s team. Sevilla and Real Madrid will both have a hangover from poor European results and are backed to end level in this encounter.
